Welcome New Head Swim Team Coach Megan Smithburg
Megan Smithburg has been dedicated to swimming for over 24 years. She was a competitive swimmer for four years in high school, trained as a lifeguard and also coached the local community swim team's age 10 and under division. After earning a Bachelors of Science in Nursing, she became employed locally as a nurse and lives in Charlevoix with her husband and three boys. Her children are also eager to participate on the Stingray Swim Team.
Megan says, "My background as a nurse, combined with my past coaching, teaching and lifeguarding experience, enables me to provide the support, motivation and success needed to be a terrific Head Swim Coach."
Megan's goal is to build a swim team that not only excels in swimming but also values discipline, dedication to skill development, teamwork, and most importantly, fun.

Join the Swim Team!
The Stingray Swim Team welcomes swimmers who have passed Stingray Academy Level IV (or can demonstrate equivalent ability) and complete one length of the pool in one of the 4 competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly).
Michigan Team Swim League
Our competitive swim league consists of 24 teams divided into a North and South Division. The season runs October through February with meets on weekends and capped in February by our Championship meets: the Northern League Meet and the MTSL State Meet. Updates will be shared as soon as MTSL decides on competition.
What is a competitive swimmer?
A Competitive Swimmer Comes to Practice
Practice consists of stroke development in all four competitive strokes, starts and turns, endurance, and team camaraderie.
A Competitive Swimmer Comes to Meets
The Charlevoix Stingrays participate in swim meets at pools across Northern and Central Michigan and the Eastern UP. In order to participate in a meet, the swimmer needs to come to practice. Meet participation is a fun way for swimmers to see the rewards of their time and dedication.
Three Types of Meets
1. Dual/Triangular Meets
2-3 teams compete and all age group events are run as one meet. Meets generally run three to four hours. Usually these meets have no fees and often there are ribbons.
2. Invitational Meets
5+ teams compete. These meets may be run as one long meet lasting 6-8 hrs or as a split meet with swimmers 10 and under in the morning; swimmers 11 and older in the afternoon with each session lasting 3-4 hrs. Meet fees are charged and ribbons and/or medals are awarded.
3. Championship Meets
The Northern League Championship meet and the MTSL State meet are the “Grand Finale” of the competitive season. A swimmer must compete in at least 2 meets to be eligible to compete in a Championship meet.
Practice Dues (to be determined)
Note: Registration fee and passes are non-refundable, non-transferable. Passes are for individuals and may not be shared between family members or friends. All punch passes expire at the end of the competitive season.
Scholarships
The Stingray Swim Team has a scholarship fund available to help cover practice dues. Funds are awarded based on the availability of funds and financial need. Scholarship applications are due at any time. Please ask Kathy Klimas, Pool Manager, for more information.
